This is piece of my character development for my latest story. Part of my inspiration was the social dynamic of Ghost World.

“We need to mail our rent soon,” Ginger said as she sipped a tall glass of lemonade, shuffling the remains of her meal around on her plate.
It was a hot and muggy day in southern Florida. Ginger and Bell were getting lunch at a small coffee house that also served an extensive lunch. They frequently people watched, and lazed their way through their boring lives on the outdoor patio there. All of the employees knew them by name, but they didn’t know any of the employees’ names. So they just made up names for them. Today they had their favorite server, Señor Sexy-pants.” He had been honorably dubbed with this title one evening as they got tipsy on overpriced wine.
“Yep,” Bell said as she stared blankly out into the parking lot, “You know, you can watch better entertainment from this patio than the internet and TV combined.” She adjusted her sunglasses and leaned back in her chair. She was watching a business man pace around his car on his cell phone. He threw his arms into the air several times, hung up the phone, and proceeded to scream, “Goddamnit!” at the top of his lungs.
“I think he locked his keys in his fancy car,” Ginger said with satisfaction. They both watched the man with interest, as if he had a lead role in a sitcom.
“Yeah, expensive cars are only impressive when you have the key to get inside,” Ginger stated, quite factually, as their server gathered their plates and refilled their beverages. “Mmm. Señor sexy-pants…” she said as she watched the server walk away from their table. “You think he’s gay?”
“Probably, good looking guys that are also nice tend to be gay… or married. Or be overly attached to their mothers. ,” Beth sighed. “It’s the unfortunate truth of the world. Sexy men always have a flaw that puts them in the category of ‘non-relationship material.’”
